Seeing Sand

July 21, 2012

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
 They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up, you are still with me!”
Psalm 139:17-18

I had no idea how much sand there was. I had imagined in my mind the possible implications of verses like this one – and yet I had no idea. Then I went to a real beach – several of them actually – and it was incredible. I had no idea.

There were so many different kinds of sand. So many different elements making it up – I was in awe. Some was crunchy, some soft. Some was made up of many different colors, some just one. But it was all sand – and it was impossible to count, impossible to measure – and difficult to comprehend.

Because of it, I was reminded of these verses – that God has thoughts about me that are precious – and that they outnumber the grains of sand – not just in the sea or on the beaches, but in the desert as well– which I haven’t even seen! I can’t even imagine. What a truly amazing and captivating thought. That God spends that much time thinking about me – and those are just the precious things. It’s also a convicting thought. How often do my thoughts turn away from Him? Too often. How much time do I spend reflecting on how precious He is to me? Not enough. Something to work on I guess.

And so as you enjoy these pictures of God’s beautiful creation – take time to rest in the fact that God thinks you’re precious – and that He thinks about it a lot.
